  1. A carbonate is a CO32 ion formed when carbon 
  2. dioxide dissolves in water; any salt formed 
  3. by this ion and another chemical element, 
  4. usuallyis a metal. Carbon dioxide (CO2) 
  5. dissolves sparingly in water, for e.g. when 
  6. rain falls through the air. Calcium carbonate
  7. (CaCO3) (chalk, limestone, and marble) is one
  8. of the most abundant carbonates known, being 
  9. a constituent of mollusc shells and the hard 
  10. outer skeletons of crustaceans.
